Originally inhabited in the 1700’s, La Vergne was officially given its name in 1852. During the Civil War, most of the city was burned, and at one time or another, both the Union and the Confederacy held the city. Although La Vergne was incorporated in 1861, the incorporation was rescinded in 1881 because the Civil War had not left enough adults able to become city officials or organize a town constitution. For the next 75 years, La Vergne lived quietly as a farming community with less than 1,000 residents. Soon thereafter, the city acquired a public water system, which helped push the city toward its future.
After reincorporation in 1972, the city steadily grew. La Vergne’s continuing popularity with new residents and its excellent location make it a popular location for industry. Many top national and international companies call La Vergne home, including Bridgestone, Ingram, Hollywood Video, Waldenbooks and DK Publishing.
Although La Vergne is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, it retains a small-town atmosphere while offering residents big-city amenities. For example, Rutherford County has grown into a prime retail center, attracting shoppers from a 10-county region. Additionally, the city of Nashville is home to the Nashville Predators and the Tennessee Titans. You will never run out of things to do and see here, but be sure not to miss the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Belle Meade Plantation. Nashville also has countless top restaurants, from French to Mexican to barbeque.
In addition to city attractions such as museums, shopping, concerts and dining, La Vergne residents also can take advantage of extensive recreation opportunities. La Vergne has 22 miles of shoreline at Percy Priest Lake, and is close to many state parks and recreational areas, including Long Hunter State Park, Smith Springs Public Use Area, Four Corners Marine Recreation Area, Poole Knobs Recreation Area and Fall Creek Recreation Area.
Families in La Vergne can also take advantage of a series of high-quality schools, including three elementary schools and one high school, not to mention several universities in close proximity.
If you are looking for a friendly place with a small-town attitude, but are not willing to give up big-city advantages and delights, La Vergne, Tennessee, is what you’re looking for!
